BACKGROUND

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process of gaining knowledge and practice to have healthy personal identities, decisions, and goals. SEL is fundamental to developing pro-social traits necessary to establish supportive relationships. Specifically, SEL skills pertain to the ability to recognize and regulate one’s emotions; identify goals, and the capacity to persevere toward attaining these. Relationship-building skills linked to SEL include perspective-taking and conflict resolution. Brain development is nurtured as SEL supports the individual’s executive functions like the ability to focus attention, remember instructions and concepts, and organize and plan. SEL is particularly important for children who have experienced severe adversity, such as extreme poverty, displacement, and violence.

In 2019, ChildFund Philippines started its preliminary interventions towards promoting SEL through the School-based Violence Prevention (SBVP) Program which aims to collaborate with children, parents, and educators to promote safe environments. Teaching SEL skills is one of the identified key strategies to enhance school-age children’s capacities to prevent, mitigate, and respond to violence they experience. ChildFund Philippines furthered its study on SEL among youth by developing the Adolescent SEL Questionnaire (ASEL-Q) in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Banos to understand how SEL skills encourage responsible decision-making among young people. ChildFund Philippines banks on the long-term and universal impact of SEL interventions on academic performance, healthy relationships, and mental wellness. Strengthening SEL skills can be an effective approach to supporting how children and young people thrive.

Digital Program Delivery: Online SEL Training Course for Basic Education Teachers

As part of ChildFund Philippines’ continuing efforts to advance SEL skills development among children, we will be developing a digital learning platform for Basic Education Teachers to learn about SEL and how they could integrate this into their teaching. ChildFund Philippines will closely work with the Department of Education in developing the SEL training program as part of merit-based professional development for teachers. Digitizing the SEL training programs and offering them on e-learning platforms and other digital delivery modes for free will make the program more accessible to the target audiences, i.e. teachers and CDWs, whenever, wherever, and however, they want. Upon completing the SEL training program, the teachers are expected to integrate practical SEL activities in the classroom.
